Samsung-built, Google-branded Android phones due later this year? from Engadget

According to man-about-town, Robert X. Cringely, Samsung is readying not one, but two separate Android-based phones, one of which is due in September, with another model following around Christmas. If you believe what you read (and what his tipster says), these phones will not be labeled Samsung, rather they will be released as Google-branded gPhones. The model released in the Fall will be a "higher-end" model which apparently looks "somewhat like a Blackberry Pearl" but with a screen that flips and "a keyboard for texting" (though to be honest, that description makes little sense, as the Pearl has a keyboard). The second device will be a cheaper model (under $100), and will likely be released after the holidays. Of course, right now this is just speculation -- given the large gap of time between now and September, these plans could be completely rearranged or nixed altogether... even if they are accurate.

Nokia N830 WiMAX-equipped internet tablet photo leaked? from Engadget

Just when you think Nokia doesn't have any more tricks up its sleeve -- wham! the WiMAX-equipped N830 internet tablet gets all up in your section (maybe). According to a sweet, sweet photo which appeared in Best Buy's February Mobile Buyer's Guide, the Finnish giant is preparing to unleash a new version of its popular N810 tablet, and it seems like this could be the rumored WiMAX device that we've heard whispers about. Of course, this could also just be a new paint job and refreshed number -- though something in our heart tells us that ain't the case. Word on the street is that we'll know what's up come CTIA. pple patent hints at "advanced multitouch," iPhone copy / paste from Engadget

Although the MacBook Air's multitouch trackpad is pretty nifty, it looks like Apple has even grander plans in store -- a recent patent filing describes the MBA's current features as "Basic Multitouch" and contains descriptions of "Advanced" touch operations like system control, file management and browser navigation. While the filing details using a combination of the thumb and two fingers to cut, copy and paste -- something that seems awfully relevant to that little iPhone thing Apple sells -- what we're most intrigued by is the description of the "side pinky swipe" to control system functions like volume and screen brightness. Since the side of the pinky produces a different shape than your fingertip on the touch sensor, the system can automatically recognize it, making it ideal for quick adjustments -- we're already dreaming up lists of macros to trigger. Of course, there's no telling if and when we'll ever see this stuff in a product, but it's probably not a coincidence the iPhone, iPod touch, and MacBook Air all use the same Broadcom touch controller -- let's hope those long-awaited new MacBook Pros join the club, eh?

NVIDIA 昨天於 MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS 2008 上發佈 APX 2500，這是 NVIDIA 生産領域上的一項突破，原因 APX 2500 乃是基於手機的處理器，可以使用於 Windows Mobile 系統中。除此之外，它在 3D 及高清處理方面也取得突破，包括直觀的 3D 用戶介面及業界首創可連續 10 個小時播放 720p 高清影片的功能。

NVIDIA APX 2500 處理器功能包括：

為掌上型裝置提供 HD（ 720p）播放和擷取功能。

專家觀點：擁抱Android　手機晶片商能否適應「開放」？

在近期於西班牙巴塞隆納舉行的Mobile World Congress上，Google的開放性Android手機平台可說是眾所矚目的焦點之一，包括德州儀器(TI)、高通(Qualcomm)等廠商，紛紛發表了相關的平台產品原型。不過這些以Linux為基礎的開放性Android手機平台展品，卻也讓人產生了更多的疑問。

問題之一是：在手機應用處理器如此競爭激烈的市場環境之下，要如何做一家所謂的「開放源碼(open source)」半導體供應商？有不少半導體製造業者都是開放手機聯盟(Open Handset Alliance)中的活躍份子；該組織是由多家科技公司與手機廠商所組成，其中不乏手機晶片大廠Broadcom、TI與Qualcomm，旨在推廣採用Android平台的手機與相關服務。

除了貢獻他們的低階驅動程式與程式庫給Android平台，這些廠商也打算進軍所謂的開放源碼領域，也就是必須把所有的原始碼開放給所有人，包括他們的競爭對手在內。這樣的開放作法所帶來的種種問題，恐怕得花好幾年的時間才能解答；而Mobile World Congress也讓這些問題一一曝光。

「開放」將為晶片業者帶來未知的挑戰

Qualcomm與TI承認，參與Android平台的職責之一，是得將其低階驅動程式的原始碼透過免費授權的方式公佈，而其他同樣也把IP提供給Android平台的廠商，也必須以同樣方式公開其原始碼。

Android的支持者明白指出，採用開放源碼模式的好處，包括可讓更多的公司能開發創新的解決方案、更快的產品上市時間、低成本，甚至對應用處理器更佳的能源利用效率。當然，TI與Qualcomm都希望參與Android平台能贏得更多的設計案，且讓他們各自的晶片產品能更輕易地搭上這一波可望在今年稍晚掀起的Android手機風潮。

然而，沒有人能確定開放源碼對半導體製造商來說將帶來哪些潛在影響；對Linux開發者來說，它們早已了解這樣的經營模式，不過在晶片供應商的領域，對軟體工程師與期行銷人員來說，這卻是個全新的概念。

未來驅動程式原始碼的開放，將為晶片功能細節帶來史無前例的「能見度」。這些原始碼通常是晶片廠商在不公開的協議之下，僅提供給OEM客戶的資訊，但現在卻直接可以讓競爭對手取得。如Broadcom與Qualcomm將可輕易地取得TI晶片的功能細節，反之亦然。

這樣的情況可能會讓這些直接競爭的一線廠商展開新一輪的對抗，當然也可能不會發生。未來那些原始碼也能輕易被紛紛崛起、對手機市場摩拳擦掌的中國半導體業者取得，這又是否將助長這些中國供應商投入生產類似功能的元件，並拉低產品價格呢？如果真是如此，採取開放源碼授權模式的晶片製造商該怎麼辦？

以上都是手機技術供應商在考量是否參與Android平台時，可能在心裡產生的顧慮。一旦現在做了決定，也許在數年之後問題就會浮上檯面。

手機多功能、多媒體趨勢是Android誕生主因？

來看看在Mobile World Congress上的各種手機展示：TI所展示的Android手機原型，採用了該公司的OMAP3430與OMAP850處理器，充分展現了TI可提供的多媒體功能、連結能力(包括WLAN與藍牙)，以及Android平台豐富的使用者介面。該平台可提供網路瀏覽、電子郵件收發，以及簡訊、視訊等各種應用程式。

Qualcomm也同樣實地展示了Android原型機，該公司的展品是採用其最初以微軟的Mobile作業系統為目標所開發的 MSM7201A單晶片為基礎。而Broadcom的展品是其中最突出的，該公司的原型採用BCM2153雙核心HSDPA處理器，可在單晶片上支援 Symbian、Windows Mobile與Linux等，現今的3G智慧手機最常用的幾種作業系統。

在Mobile World Congress上的各家手機展品，充分顯示了新一代以應用程式為中心之行動多媒體裝置的蓬勃活力。這些產品是網際網路瀏覽工具、音樂播放機、文字訊息與電子郵件接收器，也同樣能打語音電話。根據市場研究機構MultiMedia Intelligence的預測，這些多功能的高階多媒體手機出貨量，將由07年的2,000萬支，成長至2011年的2.5億支。

此外由於Apple的iPhone手機為業界帶來的衝擊，觸控螢幕也在Mobile World Congress會場上隨處可見；MultiMedia Intelligence預測，具備觸控螢幕的手機將在2011年出貨超過2億支。看看這些功能豐富的多媒體手機展品，這或許正是Android平台之所以備受矚目的最主要原因吧?

G-Phone 原型手機亮相

使用Android操作平台的G-Phone操作介面

由網路搜尋巨擘Google等34家廠商合作推動的G-Phone原型手機，昨天終於在西班牙巴塞隆納「全球行動通訊大會」(Mobile World Congress)亮相。此為Google跨進行動通訊領域的重大進展，寄望與蘋果iPhone分庭抗禮，攻佔智慧手機
市場。

全球行動通訊大會昨天登場，人氣熱絡，最受矚目的莫過於G-Phone原型機，包括英國晶片大廠ARM、日本NEC電子、美商德州儀器（Texas Instruments）、Marvell和Qualcomm等廠商，都展出內建Google行動裝置平台軟體Android的行動電話原型。參展廠商表示，G-Phone最快可在下半年量產上市。

外界原期待Google會推出獨一無二的G-Phone，未料去年11月，Google宣布34家軟體研發公司、手機廠商及電信業者組成「開放手機聯盟」 (Open Handset Alliance)，推出以Linux作業系統為基準的開放性操作平台軟體Android。加盟者包括台灣宏達電、中國移動通訊、英特爾（Intel）、 LG和eBay等。

能裝在不同廠牌手機

與蘋果iPhone不同的是，iPhone軟體僅限於iPhone使用，G-Phone使用的Android軟體則是開放密碼，程式工程師可自行研發相容軟體，安裝在不同廠牌的行動裝置上。

Google執行長舒密特（Eric Schmidt）形容，「試想不止一款G-Phone，而是有不同廠商生產的數千款G-Phone」。也就是說，G-Phone可能有數千種不同的面貌，將在手機市場上成為一支G-Phone大軍。

Google目標是透過G-Phone，提供消費者「優於個人電腦」的行動上網經驗，Google則靠廣告賺錢。發言人舒尼特指出，「目前只有少數手機提供令人驚豔的網路經驗，人們越常用手機上網，就越常用Google，我們就可賣更多廣告」。

可地圖搜尋播放影音

G-Phone功能至少包括通話、地圖搜尋及定位、影音播放等，網路瀏覽首頁均設定為
Google，電郵為Gmail，地圖搜尋則為Google Maps，其餘功能因各廠商硬體規格不同而
有所差異，也可加入自行開發的應用軟體。

諾基亞也是強勁對手

除iPhone外，G-Phone的強勁對手還有諾基亞（NOKIA）。諾基亞的操作平台Symbian在高階智慧手機市場中已佔有一席之地，但分析家認為，G-Phone採開放式軟體，相容性高，在中低階智慧手機市場仍大有可為。

Nokia宣佈收購挪威行動設備軟體開發商Trolltech

諾基亞(Nokia)和無線通訊軟體供應商奇趣科技(Trolltech)日前宣佈，雙方已簽署一項協議，諾基亞將公開競購奇趣科技。奇趣除為諾基亞帶來重要的軟體產品外，公司的員工團隊還將在加速諾基亞軟體策略的實施上發揮重要作用。
諾基亞將以每股16挪威克朗(Norwegian Kronor，約1.98歐元、2.9美元)的價格收購奇趣科技。奇趣董事會亦一致提議公司股東接受諾基亞的收購邀約。收購奇趣科技將有助於諾基亞加速行動設備和桌面應用的跨平台軟體策略的部署，有利於其推出網際網路服務業務。
在採用奇趣的技術後，諾基亞及其第三方開發商將能夠開發出適用於諾基亞終端設備和PC上網的各項應用。諾基亞為終端設備推出的軟體策略，設立在跨平台開發環境、以及執行在不同作業系統的多層軟體的基礎之上，有助於開發出跨諾基亞終端設備的應用。目前的跨平台層有如: Web runtime、Flash、Java和Open C。
諾基亞收購奇趣的目的是為了繼續奇趣科技的產品研發，為新老客戶提供支援。諾基亞力爭在技術上採用開放的方法，鼓勵和支援產業創新，加速新技術的應用，製作更好的競爭環境。諾基亞提倡開放源碼的技術，並將進一步發揚奇趣科技在開放源碼軟體開發上的企業文化。
諾基亞希望透過在桌上型電腦和行動終端領域堅持不懈的發展，不斷完善奇趣科技的產品。為進一步推動基於奇趣科技產品的產業創新，諾基亞計劃繼續採用奇趣科技相關技術的商用授權和開放源碼授權模式。
此次收購符合通行的商業交易條件，奇趣科技90%以上的全面攤薄股本股東接受收購邀約，並通過了必要的審核程序。此次收購的全部細節(包括所有的條款)，將在一份收購方案書中加以規定，該方案將於兩周內發給奇趣科技的股東。
這項公開競購將持續四週，於2008年第二季完成。在收購條件得到滿足或放棄的情況下，諾基亞將有法律責任提出現金收購餘下股份的邀約或強制性收購餘下的股份。

Android SDK m5-rc14 now available

On behalf of the entire Android team, I'm happy to let you know that an updated version of the Android SDK — we're calling it m5-rc14 — is now available. Today, we're continuing the early look at the Android SDK that we started back in November by providing updates to the Android APIs and the developer tools based, in part, on the great feedback and suggestions developers have been giving us. We're excited about the progress that we've made and look forward to making additional updates in the future as the platform evolves towards production-readiness.

There are a couple of changes in m5-rc14 I'd like to highlight:

New user interface - As I mentioned when we introduced the m3 version of the Android SDK, we're continuing to refine the UI that's available for Android. m5-rc14 replaces the previous placeholder with a new UI, but as before, work on it is still in-progress.
Layout animations - Developers can now create layout animations for their applications using the capabilities introduced in the android.view.animation package. Check out the LayoutAnimation*.java files in the APIDemos sample code for examples of how this works.
Geo-coding - android.location.Geocoder enables developers to forward and reverse geo-code (i.e. translate an address into a coordinate and vice-versa), and also search for businesses.
New media codecs - The MediaPlayer class has added support for the OGG Vorbis, MIDI, XMF, iMelody, RTTL/RTX, and OTA audio file formats.
Updated Eclipse plug-in - A new version of ADT is available and provides improvements to the Android developer experience. In particular, check out the new Android Manifest editor.

You can find more information about what's changed in a couple of documents that we've published. First is an overview of the changes to the Android APIs in API Changes Overview. If you want a more granular view of what's changed, an API diff between m3-rc37 and m5-rc14 is also available. Finally, Upgrading the SDK provides links to the two previously referenced documents and the release notes, as well as instructions on how to upgrade your development environment.

Samsung wants Android phone by next year from Engadget

Welcome to the party, guys. Actually, Samsung was already a member of Google's Open Handset Alliance -- so a welcoming committee really isn't necessary, and it comes as no surprise that the company has now gone on record saying that it wants an Android phone on the market in early 2009. If anything, it's a little surprising they're waiting so long, considering Samsung's tendency to crank out new models at a largely unrivaled pace -- and also considering that several of the company's existing handsets already include Google functionality of various sorts out of the box. Switch, anyone?

LiMo Foundation plans SDK for mid 2008 from Engadget

With all the hubbub over Android at Mobile World Congress this year (and in the world, in general), it only makes sense that other Linux-based contenders would step into the light. The LiMo Foundation -- a consortium of some pretty major players -- has announced plans for an official SDK in the second half of the year which will cover native, Java, and WebKit development. The software, dubbed the R1 LiMo Platform, will pull together existing APIs and development tools into a more cohesive whole, with ACCESS taking the lead on the native side, Aplix heading up Java development, and Motorola fleshing out the WebKit tools. There are 18 LiMo-powered handsets on display at Mobile World Congress this year, with seven vendors using the platform -- including Samsung and LG -- and the group says it's just added nine new companies to the team. The creation of a cohesive platform should bolster the consortium's position in the market. Says CCS Insight's Ben Wood, "To have a credible platform, a more detailed operating system framework is likely to be required."

採用觸控輸入的 Android 手機動手玩！from Engadget

Android 手機看夠了嗎？當然還沒！來自 PhoneMag 的報導，讓我們一窺 Android 跟觸控操作的結合，至於效果如何呢？看來挺不錯的！

利用 E28 這所生產的觸控手機當作平台，操作上雖然有點卡卡的，不過人家這可是在 200MHz OMAP TI 730 晶片、64MB RAM、64MB ROM 的表現，所以，大家也不用太要求啦！影片中大概帶過了簡單的選單操作、Google Maps、通訊錄等部份，似乎也有類似多點觸控的功能在，包括手指輕劃操作的選單、雙擊放大地圖等，而他最讓人感到舒服的地方，是可以直接下載 API 到手機當中執行。

Engadget@GSMA MWC：Android 動手玩！from Engadget

主站人員在 GSMA MWC 的展場上，會碰到這傢伙是一定的哇！

首先是上面那張、手機部份不知道是誰打造的概念機（有種很 Palm 的感覺...），展示的就是 Android，核心採用德儀（Texas Instruments）的 OMAP 3430、時脈在 500 MHz，玩起來呢？據說界面的反應非常快，整個用起來很舒服；可惜手機本身尚無網路連接功能，不過還是在裡頭打轉了一會兒，欣賞到了部份的應用程式。

另外圖庫當中，還可以的另一組，則是 NEC / Wind River 共同開發的 Android 概念平台，核心為 NEC 的 Medity2 測試版，所以是整個裸露給大家看的，時脈同樣是 500 MHz，同時由於看來是處於頗早期的開發階段，所以系統本身看起來也是很...早期。

另一個比較有趣的地方，是兩個測試機/平台上，都沒能夠看到瀏覽器當中用來輸入的界面，然而即使 NEC 的那個是處於連上網路的狀態，目前還是無法窺知一二。系統部份，應該都是 GSM，將來正式到我們手上之前，應該都會加入 HSDPA 等較高速的網路連結。（若下方圖庫無法顯示，請直接前往！）

德州儀器推出新晶片，可供 HD 影像編碼以及手機投影機功能 from Engadget

德儀（Texas Instruments）已經默默的推展這些技術好一會兒了，所以，這次在 GSMA MWC 上面推出這顆晶片，也該算是時候到了。

這顆晶片，能夠讓手機進行高畫質的影像編碼，可以提供 HD 攝影功能，還有一顆晶片則是能夠讓手機能變身為迷你投影機。

投影晶片部份先前其實已經展示過了，雖然說當時的表現有點差強人意，但現在德儀表示這晶片已經準備進入量產階段；除此之外，能夠支援 HD 影片編碼的 OMAP3440 也將在第二季出現在部份手機上頭試水溫。

搶在Google與其推動的Open Handset Alliance之Android平台問世之前，另一個全球性無線產業組織LiMo Foundation日前發表其Linux平台，並宣佈該平台可於3月份開始被廣泛採用。

LiMo Foundation是在一年前由摩托羅拉(Motorola)、NEC、NTT DoCoMo、松下行動通訊株式會社(Panasonic Mobile Communications)、三星電子(Samsung)以及Vodafone所共同成立，旨在開發可快速設計在手持式設備中的Linux架構軟體。

該組織新發表的作業系統核心與應用程式規則，似乎有跑在Open Handset Alliance的Android平台前面，搶先一步接觸消費者的企圖。不過無論是Android平台或LiMo平台，由於兩邊陣營僅釋出相關資訊給少數成員，因此無法得知它們將是競爭關係還是互補。

LiMo Foundation的執行總監Morgan Gillis表示，LiMo平台是由手機大廠所共同合作開發，將可提供全產業一個可用的開放性平台；而第一版平台與相關技術已經在許多手機上驗證成功，將有助於加快首款採用該平台的手機上市速度。

此外Gillis並強調，目前該組織正在制定平台的應用程式介面(API)，以加速該平台的推廣；第三方業者可以使用LiMo的API規格來開發新的應用程式。目前該規格已可提供試用版本，此外其中介軟體則能採用C或是C++語言來完成。

而來自NTT DoCoMo、擔任LiMo Foundation主席的Kiyohito Nagata則表示，目前已有多家公司正在著手訂定平台的第二版，持續推動平台的演進。LiMo Foundation仍歡迎無線通訊領域的業者加入；成立時間僅一年，目前該組織成員已有25個。
